SOCORRO, N.M. (KRQE) - A group of New Mexico Tech students in Socorro successfully launched a weather balloon.

Seventeen mechanical and electrical engineering students sent the balloon up Monday.

The helium balloon carried a small chest with an array of sensors to track things like altitude and temperature.

"It's great for new students and freshman come together and do such a challenging project. We are very pleased and happy with the results," New Mexico Tech Professor Dr. Kevin Wedeward said.

Once the balloon reached about 80,000 feet, it burst.

The sensors parachuted down, landing near Carrizozo.
