Rugby Club Tours Ireland, March 8 - 18

Early morning on Friday, March 8, marks frenetic activity at the New Mexico Tech gymnasium, as members of the NMT Rugby Football Club make final preparations for their ten-day playing tour to Ireland. The trip is the result of more than a year of planning and anticipation. While 20 of the 33-member tour party depart from Socorro, the entire team will rendezvous in Dublin, where seven Tech alumni players converge from points as far-flung as San Jose, California, Tampa, Florida, and Boston, Massachusetts. Depleted but not deterred by Easter weekend absences, New Mexico Tech's rugby men managed to fend off Albuquerque's Brujos 29-19 in Socorro on Saturday, March 30. After the visitors had forced a new start at 19-19 well into the second 40 minutes, Tech winger Miguel Provencio crashed over the tryline to put Tech in front for good at 24 points to 19, earning himself Man of the Match honors in the process. New Mexico Tech's rugby team was already in trouble before they left Socorro Saturday, and New Mexico State's Chiles took advantage to come from behind, stealing a 36-25 win in Las Cruces. Traveling with the bare minimum of 15 players and no reserves, the Pygmies played one man short in 90-degree heat for half the contest after ironically losing outside center Patrick Simons on their second scoring play. Israel Vaughn, a senior mathematics student, led a select group of players into New Mexico Tech Rugby Club's hall of honor on May 4, being selected the recipient of the Coach's Award for Inspiration at that group's annual awards dinner.
