Dr. Ezz El Din Abdel Hakim Khalaf is affiliated with the Geological Sciences at Cairo University, Giza, Egypt, and is a visiting professor at New Mexico Tech. His talk is titled, "Volcano-sedimentary Characteristics in the Abu Treifiya Basin, Cairo–Suez District, Egypt: Example of Dynamics and Fluidization Over Sedimentary and Volcaniclastic Beds by Emplacement of Syn-volcanic Basaltic Rocks." 4 p.m. in MSEC 101.

Regents Meeting

The New Mexico Tech Board of Regents will meet in regular session at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, in Santa Fe at a location to be determined. A complete agenda will be available at the Office of the President, Brown Hall 217, or by email at pio@nmt.edu. An executive session is scheduled to discuss personnel and legal matters.

NRAO Colloquium

Dr. Brian Keating, associate professor of physics at the University of California-San Diego, is the guest speaker for the NRAO/NM Colloquium. His talk is titled, "Discovery of Cosmic Microwave Background B-mode Polarization." The week of March 10 to 17, 2014, was a remarkable one for cosmology, marking the beginning of a new era of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements. The POLARBEAR telescope reported evidence for B-mode polarization at sub-degree scales produced by gravitational lensing of the CMB's E-mode polarization. Seven days later, the BICEP2 telescope released results showing an excess of CMB B-modes in the degree-scale angular range with greater than 5 sigma significance. 11 a.m. in the auditorium of the Domenici Science Operations Center (NRAO).

SPE Research Paper Contest

Students from five universities will be at New Mexico Tech for a regional research paper contest. Doctoral students will present their papers on March 13 in the afternoon. Bachelor's and master's students will present all day March 14. An awards dinner will be Saturday evening. All events in the Fidel Center Ballrooms.
