Fall Career Fair Features 43 Exhibitors
SOCORRO, N.M. September 4, 2013 – The Fall 2013 Career and Graduate School Fair is shaping up to be among the biggest ever, with several new recruiters attending. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the MaceyCenter.
Lillian Armijo, Director of Student Services, said she’s expecting a large turnout of students and exhibitors. With two weeks remaining until the event, 43 exhibitors have signed up, including several new companies and government agencies. For more information, click here for the website.
“Our students are in high demand,” Armijo said. “Tech grads stand out compared to students from other universities. We have an extensive and diverse group of exhibitors who have a variety of opportunities for students in every academic discipline.”
The Career Services Office again is offering workshops to help students prepare for the Career Fair. The Career Services Office will host a resumé-writing workshop on September 10, a general workshop on preparing for the Career Fair on September 16, and an interviewing workshop on September 17, featuring Theresa Hollis, formerly of Amazon. Each workshop is from 4 to 5 p.m. in Fidel 262. Students must RSVP by calling 835-5060 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Pizza will be served at each workshop.
Career Services staff will also host five-minute flash resumé reviews over the lunch hour Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 16 and 17. Students can bring a printed resumé to the FidelCenter atrium between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to get some quick pointers about resumé preparation.
Once again, Tech staff will host a Career Cab (based on the TV show Cash Cab), offering golf-cart rides across campus. Students who answer basic questions about the careers will win small giveaways.
“These workshops help students prepare,” Armijo said. “There are always things you can do to improve yourself and stand out. Students can be uncomfortable with walking up to a recruiter and speaking to them.”
The Career Fair is not just for upperclassmen; freshmen and sophomores will find internship and co-op opportunities as well.
The Career Fair booklet and the website include a section that lists exhibitors by the type of opportunities available – from internships through post-docs and full-time career-track employment.
