The mission of Counseling Services is to support the emotional, intellectual and social development of students at New Mexico Tech.

Counseling Services helps individuals resolve existing problems, prevent potential problems, and develop new skills that will enrich their lives.

 

Eligibility:

 

 

ü  If you are a currently enrolled NMT graduate or undergraduate student registered for a minimum of 6 credit 

        hours, you are eligible for individual, couples/family and or group sessions.

ü Students are limited to 4 to 6 individual sessions per semester.

ü  There are limits to the total amount of services that can be received by any one individual NMT student. Additional 

        sessions may be requested for extenuating circumstances.

ü  If your counselor determines that counseling services does not meet your needs, he/she will work with you to find

        an appropriate referral.

·        Difficulties with motivation or decision-making

·        Relationships difficulties- friends, families, partners, roommates…..

·        Exam stress and anxiety

·        Uncertainty about careers

·        Problems with school-studying, communicating with professors…..

·        Depression

·        Anxiety

·        Loneliness

·        Identity Issues

·        Sexual orientation

·        Feeling suicidal or thoughts that life is not worth living

·        Worries about behaviors-eating, drinking, drug use, sex

·        Difficulty making friends

·        Communicating skills

·        Loss-illness/death of a loved one, personal loss

 

 

What can I expect from Counseling?

 

Counseling is a type of learning about yourself, your feelings, your relationship with others. As in any learning environment, you will benefit most if you participate actively attend your sessions on time and are honest with your counselor. The therapists on staff work closely with the Student Health Center for cases that include medication managment or other health concerns.

 

In turn your counselor will listen to your concerns, assist your setting and reaching appropriate goals and will respect your confidentiality. The staff of Counseling Services abide by the ethical principles of the American Psychological Association and the New Mexico Board of Psychologist Examiners. You can expect to have services delivered in a professional, legal, and ethical manner.

 

If your concerns require interventions that are outside the scope of our services, your counselor will refer you to other services on campus and in the community.

 

 

After hours mental health emergency:

 

Students in crisis, or friends of students in crisis, whether on-campus or off-campus, should contact Campus Police immediately. Dial x5434 on campus or 835-5434 off campus. Campus Police will put into effect a series of steps to obtain the appropriate level of help for the student.
