New Mexico Tech Alumni Association
Board of Director’s Meeting
August 21, 2008

Directors Present: Geza Keller, Louise Chamberlin, Steve Dixon, Linda Gonzales, Tom Dillon, Russ Erbes, John Dowdle, Shasta Marrero, Richard Miller

Staff Present: Cheryl Pulaski, Director for Advancement; Carol Lynn Tiegs, Assistant Director for Advancement

Cheryl opened the meeting with compliments to the board for their work and accomplishments over the past year. She indicated that Carol Lynn will be leaving New Mexico Tech to take a position in Colorado the end of September. Two possible candidates for Carol Lynn’s position have already been identified and Carol Lynn will be available as a liaison/consultant through 49ers weekend. Cheryl also related that she has been undergoing treatment for cancer since the end of April. She is now 50 percent through her treatment. She is working from home and expects to be back in the office in January 2009. She asked for the board’s help in her temporary absence and the transition in Carol Lynn’s position.

Carol Lynn welcomed new board members Richard Miller, Karla Moore, and John Dowdle, who is incoming president of the Santa Fe/Los Alamos Chapter. She also announced that Charlie Goodman will continue to serve on the association board, although is stepping down as president of the Santa Fe/Los Alamos Chapter.

Carol Lynn reported that preliminary survey results indicate that alumni primarily want the association to serve as a vehicle to keep them in touch with fellow alumni through “Gold Pan”, the website, chapters and other special events. The board discussed doing a more refined email survey.

An Internet Committee consisting of Geza (chair), Russ Erbes and Brett Wendt formed to explore the costs and considerations involved in creating an alumni association website presence off the New Mexico Tech website, but linked to it. Carol Lynn and Cheryl will explore possible ways to make it easier for graduates to keep their New Mexico Tech email addresses. Carol Lynn will also check with Tom Cryan, who has been working on a web presence for the Colorado Chapter, on his progress, and will send Geza the contact information for key people in Information Services Department (ISD) involved in website design.

There is a need for alumni help as webmaster. Shasta volunteered her husband Nico, also a Tech alum.

The board discussed ways to connect current students with the alumni association. Suggestions included:

  • More “members only” services or discounts
  • Lifetime nmt.edu email
  • Alumni Association participation in Convocation and Commencement
  • Greater presence at Tech Career Fairs
  • An alumni blog to tell students what it’s like in the “real world”
  • Need person-to-person marketing
  • An alumni meeting room on campus

Shasta will discuss ways to reach out to grad students at the next GSA meeting, and will talk with Dylan about undergraduate options

Linda reminded that taking only one credit at Tech is all that’s required to join the Alumni Association, and suggested more outreach to Socorro-area residents who attended Tech but didn’t graduate (as well as those who did).

There was consensus that making communication with the school easy was a critical factor.

Distinguished Service Award Committee

Tom, who served on the committee last year, said that the process was fairly straightforward once candidate names were received. He offered to serve on the committee again this year.

Carol Lynn will ask Navid Mojtabai and Sharon Sessions if they will be willing to serve again as well.
