Frequently Asked Questions

 

My connection doesn't seem to be working.

        If you have not configured your TCP/IP settings, look here. If you have already configured your settings, see the troubleshooting section.

How do I deauthenticate my computer?

         You can de-authenticate your computer by clicking here.

What do I need to use the RCN?

         See the Basic RCN Information page for details.

 

I set up my TCP/IP settings, and I still can't get a connection.

        Your network cable may be bad. Try using another cable (ask your roommate for theirs) to see if it is the cable.  If that is not the case, check out our troubleshooting page.

        We turn off the ports a few weeks after the semester starts.  We turn off the ports that do not have a port activation request form corresponding with a particular port.  So if you did not fill out a connection form, your port will be turned off a few weeks into the semester.

Why is the network so slow?

       This usually isn't a problem with our network, but is just general net congestion.  If you can still get fast transfers on campus, then our network is not the problem.  Unfortunately, we have no control over the speed of the rest of the Internet.  However, the local network can be slowed down by people playing sound or video files that are on other computers.  Please do not waste bandwidth like this, copy the files to your machine before playing them.

 

My port was working, then all of a sudden it stopped.

        There could be a number of reasons why your port is not working.  Periodically, ITC will update some of the Internet hardware.  If you can access the intranet, but not the Internet, then this is probably the case.  We try not to keep the Internet down for too long, but sometimes it may last up to an hour.

        If that is not the case, your network cable may be bad.  Try using another cable (ask your roommate for theirs) to see if it is the cable.  If that is not the case, check out our troubleshooting page.

        We are constantly monitoring all the RCN connections.  If we find that your computer is in violation of the RCN agreement you signed, we will discontinue your service.  Violations include, but are not limited to, sharing MP3s, using other networking equipment such as hubs, and setting up servers.  File sharing, such as through Limewire, eDonkey (eMule), or Morpheus, is in violation of this agreement.

I am unable to access the Internet with my computer no matter where I plug it in.

Can I move from room to room within a dorm with my computer?

        Yes. Moving a machine to a different port within the same dorm does not typically require re-authentication.

 

Can I move from dorm to dorm with my computer?

        Yes. However, you will have to re-authenticate each time you move your computer to a different dorm, regardless of which dorm it is.

 

Can I leave my PC in my dorm room, and take my wireless-capable laptop/PDA/game device to a wireless spot?

        Yes. Each person is allowed one wired connection and one wireless connection.

 

Can I take my dorm authenticated laptop from my room and go to a wireless spot?

        Yes. However, you will need to re-authenticate onto the wireless network.

 

I have two computers. Can I simultaneously authenticate both with my banweb id?

         If you want to authenticate two computers with your banner ID, you must havewill need a free port in your residence. Then, contact ITC for a secondary login. The secondary login will be $14 per month.

 

How do I check my IP address in Microsoft Windows 2000/XP?

        Open up the command prompt (start->run->"cmd"). type "ipconfig" and it should list your ethernet settings.

 

What name is associated with my IP address?

        You can find the name associated with your address by performing an nslookup. In Windows, this can be done by opening the command prompt and typing "nslookup" followed by a space and your IP address.
