Physics Department Seminar

Date: Thu. 1 Nov, 2012 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Duration: 1 Hour

Dr. Nicole Vogt, associate professor of astronomy at New Mexico State University, will present a Physics Department seminar at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the third floor ballroom of the Fidel Center. Vogt will present, “The General Education Astronomy Source (GEAS) Project: Extending the Reach of Astronomy Education.” In New Mexico, the doubling of the statewide requirement for laboratory science courses at the college level represents both an opportunity to further aid in the development of math and science skills in our general population, and an added barrier to degree completion. Vogt will discuss the compelling need for alternate avenues for teaching science in New Mexico. She will present a set of NASA- and NSF-sponsored resources to aid in teaching astronomy at the college level, including an online tutor with 12,000+ questions, an instructor review interface, and a set of laboratory exercises accessible via distance education.
