"Standing Down": A Reading Discussion Group for Veterans

The Socorro Public Library is hosting an adult program, Standing Down, for veterans, which will take place at the Skeen Library on campus.  
The New Mexico Humanities Council and Great Books Foundation are working with the library to bring a national reading and discussion program for veterans, the goal of which is to enable veterans to reflect on their service as well as the challenges and opportunities of transitioning from active duty to civilian life.
Each participant will receive a FREE copy of the book “Standing Down”
Week One:
February 2 and 4
Week Two:
February 9 and 11
Week Three:
February 16 and 18
The reading discussions will start at 5:15 p.m. in Room 212, NMT Skeen Library
This program is designed as a reading and discussion forum for veterans. In the weekly meetings the group will discuss and relate to various selections from the anthology; Standing Down. This book features works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, essays, journalism, public documents, and memoirs.  In the program, veterans read and discuss a series of thematically related works of literature over the course of six sessions. 
 

Week Two: February 9 and 11

The Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, "He sat there on the porch reading a book on the war. It was a history and he was reading about all the engagements he had been in. It was the most interesting reading he had ever done....Now he was really learning about the war." –Ernest Hemingway, "Soldier's Home" (Standing Down, xvii)
The discussion this week will be on the impact of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

NMT Inventors and Entrepreneurs Workshop - Application Deadline

The inaugural Inventors and Entrepreneurs Workshop will be Friday and Saturday, April 15-16, on the 3rd floor of the Fidel Center. Anyone interested in applying to present an invention can do so at http://management.nmt.edu/invent/. The deadline to apply is today, Sunday, Feb. 29.

NMT Inventors and Entrepreneurs Workshop - Early Registration Deadline

The workshop will be Friday and Saturday, April 15-16, on the 3rd floor of the Fidel Center. The workshop is $25 for students and $85 for all others who register by today, March 15. Visit management.nmt.ed/invent/ to register. After today, registration is $100.

NM Science & Engineering Fair State Finals

High school and middle school students from around the state will be in Socorro for the N.M. Science and Engineering Fair.  Exhibits will be open for judging all day in the Fidel Center ballrooms. Awards will be announced at Macey Center beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Winners will advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix in May.
