The New Mexico Humanities Council and Great Books Foundation are working with the library to bring a national reading and discussion program for veterans, the goal of which is to enable veterans to reflect on their service as well as the challenges and opportunities of transitioning from active duty to civilian life.
Each participant will receive a FREE copy of the book "Standing Down"
Week One:
February 2 and 4
Week Two:
February 9 and 11
Week Three:
February 16 and 18
The reading discussions will start at 5:15 p.m. in Room 212, NMT Skeen Library
This program is designed as a reading and discussion forum for veterans. In the weekly meetings the group will discuss and relate to various selections from the anthology; Standing Down. This book features works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, essays, journalism, public documents, and memoirs. In the program, veterans read and discuss a series of thematically related works of literature over the course of six sessions.

Week One: February 2 and 4
Welcome, "We pack our stories, not realizing their weight, and walk away to find home. We don't recount how we sat and cleaned our rifles – for years – this repetitive act too unremarkable to find its way into small talk on the street, but it is heavy with muscle memory; and it was during this ritual that we knew we were foot soldiers of the nation. Then, one day, we turned in our weapons at the armory and never went back." (Standing Down, xv)
This first week's focus is on introductions. We will get to know each other and the readings.
