Library Director Candidate Talk

Subash Gandhi is a candidate for the open position of Skeen Library Director.  He will present his vision for "The Skeen Library in 2020," which will be followed by a Q&A session. Gandhi is the Coordinator of Library Research Services at Queens College in Flushing, N.Y., part of the City University of New York system. All faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend. 4 p.m. in Einstein's Atrium on the library's upper level.

NMT Distinguished Lecture Series

New Mexico Tech has started a new distinguished lecture program, where members of the Tech faculty will present their work to the public. The first of these free events will be at 7 p.m., Friday, April 29, at the Macey Center on Tech campus.
Dr. Michelle Creech-Eakman, physics professor and project scientist of the MRO Interferometer, will present the first lecture in the series. Her talk is titled "Discovering and Exploring New World." Creech-Eakman will discuss some of the new research on finding exoplanets (planets in other solar systems). Creech-Eakman is also the principal investigator for NESSI, the New Mexico Extrasolar Spectroscopic Instrument, an instrument purpose-built to characterize exoplanets at the MRO's 2.4-meter telescope.
The public is invited and the talk will be followed by a reception.

Jonathan Helmke is a candidate for the open position of Skeen Library Director.  He will present his vision for "The Skeen Library in 2020," which will be followed by a Q&A session. Helmke is the Assistant Director for Technical Services and Library Systems at the University of Dubuque in Iowa. All faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend. 4 p.m. in Einstein's Atrium on the library's upper level.

Hydrology Master's Thesis Defense

Phoebe Nicholls, master's candidate in the Earth and Environmental Science Department, will defend her thesis titled, "Sorption Characterization of Environmentally Relevant Concentrations of Arsenic and Chromium to Soils Containing Pyrogenic Black Carbon in Watersheds Affected by Wildfires." 2 p.m. in MSEC 203.

GSA Special Guest Speaker

Dr. Heather Bloemhard is the Bahcall Public Policy Fellow at the American Astronomical Society and a recent graduate of New Mexico Tech. She will give a talk to the NMT community titled "Science Policy: A Guide to Bridging the Gap Between Scientists and Policymakers." Bloemhard will address why and how scientists should get involved in policy discussions. This event is open to all students and faculty, and is hosted by the Graduate Student Association (GSA). Thursday, May 12, at 4:30 p.m. in MSEC 101.
