Alan Stern, of Southwest Research Institute (SWRI), will present the NRAO-Socorro colloquium. His talk is "New Horizons: Exploration of the Pluto System and the Kuiper Belt." New Horizons launched in January 2006 and made the first exploration of the Pluto system in July 2015. The craft is on a five-year mission to explore the Kuiper Belt and objects in it. The spacecraft carries a sophisticated payload of imagers, spectrometers, and other scientific instruments that have been used to study Pluto, its five moons, Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs), and the heliosphere. Stern will describe the mission's objectives, the capabilities of the payload, the flyby, and some major scientific discoveries. Chief among the results, Stern will discuss will be the evidence for various kinds of internal/geological/atmospheric/volatile transport activity on Pluto. 11 a.m. in the auditorium of the Domenici Science Operations Center (NRAO).
