Materials Engineering Seminar

Date: Wed. 12 Apr, 2017 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Duration: 1 Hour
Location: Cramer Hall

Dr. T. David Burleigh, profesor in the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at Tech, will present the Materials Engineering Seminar. His talk is titled "Meteorites and Metallurgy." Meteorites provided mankind with their first steel tools before the development of wrought iron. Hittite clay tablets in 1800 BC record that "amutum" (iron-nickel meteorites) were worth eight-times their weight in gold. The Egyptian King Tutankhamun was buried in 1330 BC with his iron meteorite dagger at his side. This lecture explores the metallurgy of meteorites, and describes the origins and cooling rates that led to the Widmanstatten patterns. 3 p.m. in Cramer 124
