Physics Department Colloquium

Date: Thu. 6 Apr, 2017 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Duration: 1 Hour
Location: Workman Center

Dr. Caitano da Silva, post-doc in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College, will present the Physics Department colloquium. His talk is titled "Fundamental Questions in Lightning Physics." Da Silva will discuss key questions at the frontier of lightning physics including: (1) streamer-to-leader transition, a plasma instability that plays a key role in the lightning onset and is responsible for making its channels propagate tens of kilometers in the atmosphere; (2) initial breakdown pulses and narrow bipolar events, the electromagnetic fingerprints of lightning birth; (3) lightning impacts in the upper atmosphere, such as the so-called gigantic jets, 80-km-long upward channels that traverse the ozone layer and discharge thunderstorms to space; and (4) acceleration of energetic electrons and X-ray emission in the tips of growing lightning channels. 4 p.m. in Workman 101.
