Dr. Peter Dickens., Sandia National Laboratories, will present the Materials Engineering Seminar Series. His talk is titled "Increased Vacancy Formation and Improved Decay Kinetics in Cerium and Calcium Co-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet." Dickens will discuss the scintillation and defect properties of three Ce,Ca:Y3Al5O12 single crystals grown by the Czochralski method at the Center for Materials Research, Washington State University, which were co-doped with different amounts of calcium. Among the characterization methods used, positron annihilation spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence combined with YAG's crystal field splitting of the Ce 5d levels help to elucidate the mechanism for improved scintillation decay times in the scintillator. 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, in Cramer 124
