Geethika Kovelamudi will defend her independent study "The Security and Usability Analysis of Scramble Keypad for PIN Unlock of Smartphones" on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 10 am in Cramer 227.

Lock screen and PIN unlock are simple and effective screen unlock mechanisms used by about one third of smartphone users. However, it is also susceptible to a number of attacks. Scramble keypad is a method proposed to improve the security of PIN by changing the the layout of the keypad in each PIN-entry process. In this work, we did a thorough study of the security and usability of scramble keypad through theoritical analysis and user study. Our security analysis shows that scramble keypad can defend smudge attacks perfectly and greatly reduce the threats of side-channel attacks.
