Adventures in Building an Airplane

Date: Tue. 9 Feb, 2016 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Duration: 1 Hour
Location: Cramer Hall

Mechanical Engineering graduate seminar. Guest speaker Alan Erickson, an alumnus of Tech, will share his experience building an airplane including:

  • How to treat aluminum such that it wants to keep flying as long as you do
  • The subtly amazing engineering of solid rivets, and the heartache of installing them perfectly
  • What bolts actually are, and how worryingly few hold the engine on
  • Clecos, nutplates, dimplers, and other strange zoo animals
  • Life in a high-vibration environment
  • Sculpting with composites
  • Chaos (the math kind) and planning distance in a complex project
  • Designing for inspectability and maintainability
