NRAO Colloquium

Date: Fri. 14 Nov, 2014 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Duration: 1 Hour
Location: NRAO

This Week's NRAO/NM Colloquium features Dr. Maura McLaughlin of West Virginia University. She will present "The Double Pulsar: A Decade of Surprises." The only known binary system of two detectable pulsars ("The Double Pulsar") was discovered in 2003. Since that time, this remarkable binary has been used to test general relativity, probe pulsar emission physics, constrain fundamental properties of neutron stars, and calculated expected event rates for ground-based gravitational wave detectors. McLaughlin will review 10 years of sensitive Green Bank Telescope observations of this system and how these observations have been used in all of these ways. McLaughlin is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at WVU. 11 a.m. in the auditorium at the Domenici Science Operations Center (NRAO).
