Physics Seminar

Date: Thu. 26 Sep, 2013 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Duration: 1 Hour
Location: Workman Center

Dr. Ken Minschwaner, professor in the Department of Physics at Tech, will present the department seminar.  Over the past six weeks, Minschwaner and a team of students have launched 30 balloon-borne instrument packages as part of the SEACIONS (Southeast American Consortium for Intensive Ozonesonde Network Study) project. This field campaign involved balloon flights from eight sites across the southern and central U.S., which were timed to coincide with overpasses of the NASA Aura Earth Observing Satellite. SEACIONS is part of a larger NASA project called SEAC4RS (Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys). This project aims to validate satellite measurements, improve understanding of convective and wave signatures in ozone, study interactions of urban pollution with convection, and derive empirical tropospheric ozone budgets. Minschwaner will present some of our preliminary findings. 4 p.m. in Workman 101.
