Physics Department Seminar

Date: Thu. 20 Nov, 2014 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Duration: 1 Hour
Location: Workman Center

Dr. Harald Edens of New Mexico Tech will present the Physics Department seminar. His talk is titled, "The Discovery of the Quinary Rainbow." After decades of searching by atmospheric-optics enthusiasts, the natural fifth-order (quinary) rainbow was finally photographed on 8 August 2012 at Langmuir Laboratory in the Magdalena Mountains. The fifth-order rainbow appears as a broad green hue bordered by blue-violet, situated between the primary and secondary rainbows in a dark region of sky known as Alexander's dark band. Its red color band is overlapped by that of the secondary rainbow. This presentation gives an overview of the observations to date of the fifth-order rainbow, placing it in context with other recently discovered higher-order (tertiary and quaternary) rainbows, and rainbow physics.  4 p.m. in Workman 101.
