Socorro, New Mexico: an Overview

Faculty and Staff Resources :: Student Resources -- Academic :: Student Life :: Recreation :: Recreational Facilities :: Student Clubs and Activities

Socorro (population 9000) is located in the central Rio Grande valley, 76 miles south of Albuquerque and 194 miles north of El Paso. Air travelers can fly into Albuquerque's International Sunport and take a shuttle to Socorro. Commercial bus service is available from both Albuquerque and El Paso.

Socorro and its surroundings are enjoyed by mountain bikers, runners, astronomers, hikers, campers, rock climbers, birders, geologists, rockhounds, photographers, and people who like the slower pace of small-town life. Socorro has a rich history with many resources located around town, such as the El Camino Real Heritage Center. Tech's Performing Arts Series brings a variety of entertainment to campus each semester, and students can participate in the Music Program's vocal or instrumental performing groups that present several public concerts and one musical production each year. Tech students also enjoy an active intramural sports program, a gymnasium with a weight room and sports equipment rentals, a swim center, and a championship 18-hole golf course.

Tech students keep busy and entertained by participating in many clubs and organizations, ranging from sports to science. They sing and play musical instruments, they scuba dive and crawl through caves, they role-play, and they practice medieval warfare. They also belong to many student chapters of professional organizations, which often feature speakers, field trips, and other activities to prepare them for the working world.
