Epilogue
A sunny day on the desert, 1989
At the base of an 8000 foot desert mountain in New Mexico,
near the Rio Grande, there is a complex of many buildings -- impressive buildings,
full of advanced, exotic scientific equipment. This oasis of grass and trees is
surrounded by creosote bush, cactus, and desert grasses. The buildings, on the
edge of the town, are designed as a center for teaching and research, and the
institution has a fine reputation around the world. There is money enough with
which to operate, a student body that is large enough, and a highly trained teaching
and research faculty. The people of the town rejoice. It is a proud day. It all
had started one hundred years ago, in 1889. A dream, after much hard work, had
been realized. The frontier, gone now, was altered. Once again, strike up the
band, call out the orators, and bring on the notables, and, once again, dedicate
the school as a new beginning for the town and the State of New Mexico. The second
century is under way.
